Standards and Guides

  • Energy Performance Certificates The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) gives home owners, tenants and buyers information on the energy efficiency of their property. It gives the building a standard energy and carbon emission efficiency grade from ‘A’ to ‘G’, where ‘A’ is the most efficient and with the average to date being D. See also Energy Performance Certificates
  • Code for Sustainable Homes This only applies to new build houses. The Code measures the sustainability of a new home against nine categories of sustainable design, rating the 'whole home' as a complete package. The Code uses a 1 to 6 star rating system to communicate the overall sustainability performance of a new home.

Notes and Links

  • Located at Heeley City Farm, approximately 1.5 miles from Sheffield City Centre, South Yorkshire Energy Centre is based in an eco-refurbished terraced house originally built around 1880.
  • The 2005 UK Government’s Sustainable Development Strategy charges the Sustainable Development Commission with the role of ‘watchdog for sustainable development’. Sustainable Communities Plan Review 2007: "In view of the very real progress that the government has made in its thinking on new build housing, the SDC is keen for the existing housing stock (the major contributor to carbon emissions from the household sector) to be tackled with the same vigour. Housing refurbishment and regeneration programmes must be aimed at dramatically cutting carbon emissions from the existing housing stock."
  • Pathfinder: Transform South Yorkshire "This pathfinder covers nearly 300,000 residents, the largest geographical area and the most dwellings of the nine pathfinders, including parts of all four South Yorkshire authorities. The area has a legacy of industrial decline and concentrated deprivation."
